Go For The Green!

Family articlesGo For The Green!

There are so many fun options for St. Patrick’s Day. Many restaurants offer events and dinners for this fun holiday. If you’re looking for a more intimate dinner setting, have I got some ideas for you. Host a fun, themed, casual dinner for 6 to 8 of your close friends.

Invitations – Cut a four-leaf clover out of green construction paper, to make up your invitations. Invite your guests to dress in theme. Mail out the invites, 3 weeks before the date of the dinner. Ask for a RSVP.

Décor – The dinner table should be fun and subtle. Use a white table cover, sprinkle shamrock confetti over the table. Place a black pot in the center of the table, filled with gold plastic coins and gold & green foiled coined chocolates. Then from each side of the pot (long ways on the table), lay rows of flowers in the following colors: red, yellow, and green, to the end of the table. Keep the flowers refrigerated and watered until close to the time, that the guests are to arrive. Then lay them out flat, lay one another over the other’s stem. Do not mix colors, keep each color in it’s own row. This will give the effect of a rainbow from each end of the table, leading towards the middle, where your guests will the pot of gold.

Once your guests arrive offer any of the following fun accessories: St. Patrick’s Day top hats, derby hats, vests, shamrock headbands and there are so many other fun, inexpensive party accessories that can be bought by the dozen. Serve your guests beverages, giving you time to welcome them and make them feel at home. A lime-aid (lemonade/lime mixture) with a slice of lime floating in the glass and several sliced limes floating in the pitcher. You can always add a little vodka or rum for the adults (remember to be responsible for your guests). Or go with the traditional green beverages, however no one wants to be talking all night with a green mouth. Keep the green food coloring to a minimum.

For some dinner ideas, research the following for recipes: soda bread, potato bread, lamb chops, corned beef, boiled potatoes and potato w/cabbage or carrot mixture. These are some of the traditional items. Mix a couple of the above with some of your own ideas.

After dinner has been served, clear the table of the dishes. Leave the guests beverages. As the host, tell a funny Irish tale. This should be easy to find on the internet or at the library. There are so many of them. Just print it off and read it to the group. Now it is time to serve some Irish coffees, research to find your favorite blend. For dessert, serve a scoop of vanilla ice cream with Irish crème or crème de mint drizzled over it and two chocolate mints stuck into the side of the scoop. After eating the ice cream, entertain your guests with this last activity. Put together St. Patrick’s Day “fun” trivia questions. Have them on small cards. Ask the questions and listen to your guests answer away. Then you can reveal the real answer.

The evening will be a success. Your guests will be amazed at how comfortable and fun, this evening was. As a final gesture, pre pack up some of the gold & chocolate coins out of the pot with a flower for each guest to take home. Have a wonderful evening and go for the green!
