Resizing Your Desktop & Color Display

By default, Windows sets your display settings to the lowest settings possible if it can not identify your monitor. The lowest settings are usually 640 X 480-pixel resolution and 256 colors. Even if Windows does identify your monitor correctly, the settings may still not be the optimal settings. By making changes to the settings to see what's best for you, you can often get a bigger desktop and gain crisp, clear colors.

TO CHANGE YOUR DISPLAY

There are two ways to access the display settings. The first is by clicking 'Start|Control Panel|Display|Settings Tab'. The second is by clicking on an open area of your desktop and selecting "properties" from the pop-up box. Either will bring up the "Display Properties" Dialog Box.

If your settings are set to default, it will read 256 colors and 640 X 480 pixels. You can often do better by setting the resolution to 800 X 600-pixels and your color options to True Color (24 bit). After clicking "Apply," a dialog box will appear and let you know that Windows will now resize your desktop - click yes.

Your screen will then flicker and appear with the new settings. Another small dialog box will appear and ask if you want to keep these settings - click yes. Try the new settings for a few days and see if you prefer them. This will give you a chance to adjust to the different settings as it may seem weird at first. If you decide that you do not prefer the new sttings, go ahead and change them back as described above.

Good Luck!
