LED Circuit Power

This calculator is designed to determine the series resistor needed to connect various series combinations of light emitting diodes or LEDs, and to determine the circuit power emitted by that diode. As a general rule, LED voltages vary from about 1.6 to 4.5, the lowest requirement being green with 2 volts being a close approximation for red and orange LEDs. Blue and white LEDs will require higher voltages with blue being about 3.5 volts and white about 4.5 volts. To find the series resistor needed, enter the total number of LEDs, the individual LED voltage, 1.6 to 4.5, the desired or applicable current, normally about 10 to 20 mA, and the total circuit supply voltage, such as but not limited to, 3, 6, 9 or 12 volts. Click on Calculate to find the resistor value needed and calculate the power of the diode in the circuit. Use a resistor rated higher in wattage than the displayed required power, most load requirements for a diode application use a 1/4 watt resistor. For more detailed LED information visit these two sites, which have good information and lead to others also; here and also here. For identification purposes, the negative side of the LED is the flat side and the shorter lead.
